Life Force 2010
Life force is a body of work in which energy and the physical body serves as the main themes for a series of drawings explorations.
Throughout the project I looked at my own duality; reflecting and observing my inner private peaceful energy and exploring my potential for anger and violence.
From June 2009 to June 2010 for one year I did a daily drawing .The intention of each drawing was to connect to my own energy and the energetic fields around me.
The idea was to capture a moment in time, a fragment of energy, and communicate this in a two-dimensional form, while in a place of calm and peace.
I also collected an image from the newspaper each day; it became a record or visual diary of what is happening in the outside world on a daily basis.
I did not intend the images of the external world to influence the daily energy drawings, but simply to record an emotional response to a news image.
The performance piece explored negative ‘Life Forces’ and their influence on us as well as looking at our own potential for violence. Not unlike the images from the newspaper,
it is a very wide and emotive subject. I did not want to recreate violence, as we are bombarded with it everyday. What I wanted to do is find a way to capture the energy of anger,
using strong emotions, movement and drawings. I proposed to do this in a confined space, with a choreographer, dancers, paper, drawing equipment, sound and an audience.
It was important that the performance was live, where the viewers were part of the environment interconnected with the energy of the performers.
Artists, throughout history, have connected to the universal life force to produce works of spiritual, emotional and physical importance.
We connect to their work on a level that is beyond words or emotions – we connect deep within our soul.
