About
Marsha Roddy’s career has spanned over 30 years as an Artist and Designer. Her work explores three-dimensional space, movement, texture and above all how we, as humans, connect and express ourselves. Her enthusiasm and energy have taken her on many adventures. She has designed sets and costumes for the stage, film and television; worked on architectural projects, conceived haute couture for events and created pieces of performance art.
Her work has taken her from the UK to Amsterdam, USA, China, Japan and Hong Kong. She has been the production designer on a number of feature as well as independent films including: the award winning, ‘Anchoress’ and ‘73 Virgins’.
In the UK Marsha worked on numerous theatre productions for many august theatres including: ‘Waiting for Godot,’ at The Crucible Theatre, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘East is East’ and ‘Bali the Sacrifice’ at the Leicester Haymarket, ‘Amen Corner’, at the Lyric theatre in London’s West End, and ‘Cafe Vesuvio’ at the Manchester Royal Exchange.
Additionally, Marsha has designed for Opera including: ‘Perfectly Poisonous’ and ‘I can’t stand Wagner’ both at Bloomsbury Theatre. There have also been numerous dance projects including many for the Bullies Ballerinas as well as the ‘Big Dance’ in Trafalgar Square for the BBC and ‘Tomorrow’s Men’ in Canary Wharf. Marsha’s love of children’s productions has seen her design many popular award winning shows for TV including: ‘Number Jacks’ and ‘The Shiny Show’ for Open Mind Productions/BBC and ‘Little Paz’ for the Discovery Channel.
After designing both the original production of ‘The Marriage Bed’ in London and New York, she designed it in Hong Kong at the HKAPA’s Drama Theatre. She has worked with Lindsey McAlister at HKYAF, designing ‘Sweeney Todd’, ‘Rent’, ‘Spring Awakening’, ‘Godspell’, ‘Chorus Line’ ‘Matilda’ and most recently ‘Blood Brothers’. She worked with Theatre Noir, designing ‘Animal Farm‘ and‘I’MPerfect’ both directed by William Yip. Since moving to HK her work has continued to diversify: having recently designed a large resident theatre production for the renowned Chinese movie Director Chuan Lu for the epic, ‘Myth of the Silk Road’, in Urumqi in Northern China and presented workshops’ for teachers/ students for ‘Language of Our Time’ a joint project with the British Council and Hong Kong’s Youth Arts Foundation.
Over the past five years Marsha has had the pleasure of designing costumes and haute couture style dresses in Hong Kong, China and Japan for large events, with clients such as Mont Blanc, Cartier, Perrier Jouet, Louis Vuitton, Faberge, Van Cleef and Arpels.
Marsha believes the journey is as important as the final outcome. Each project no matter how big or small has its own unique demands and requires the same enthusiasm dedication and creative excellence. She is currently working on the project “Unleashed’, following the success of ‘Breathless’ and ‘Life Force’, which continues her explorations of dance and drawing as part of a performance art piece. The work challenges perceptions of fear and prejudice.
